Where a 4x4 genuinely earns its keep in Kenya

A four wheel drive is not simply a larger SUV, and the difference matters the moment you leave tarmac. Inside the national parks the tracks are murram, rutted and often badly corrugated, and after rain they can become genuinely demanding. Amboseli, Tsavo and large parts of the Maasai Mara all include sections where two wheel drive vehicles get stuck every single season, usually at the least convenient possible moment.

The same applies to upcountry travel and project work. If you are heading to a farm, a construction site, a remote clinic or a rural home where the last few kilometres are dirt, a 4x4 removes the uncertainty entirely. Rainy season is when people most regret choosing the cheaper option. Between March and May, and again in the shorter rains, a track that was firm and dusty in the morning can be slick and deeply rutted by afternoon.
