Wilson Airport serves a completely different purpose from JKIA, and understanding the distinction saves a lot of confusion. Wilson handles domestic and regional flights, charter operations and, above all, the light aircraft that carry visitors to the safari destinations. If you are flying to the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu or the coast on a small aircraft, you are almost certainly departing from Wilson.

It is also much closer to the city. Sitting just off Langata Road, Wilson is typically twenty to thirty minutes from the centre of Nairobi and closer still from Karen, Langata and Kilimani, which makes the logistics considerably easier than an international departure. Langata Road does get busy during peaks, so we still build in a sensible margin, but the distances involved are far more forgiving.

The terminals themselves are small and informal by comparison with JKIA, and check in for light aircraft is quick. What catches people out is the baggage allowance, which on safari flights is strict and often limited to soft bags of around fifteen kilograms.
