Planning your self-drive safari route from Nairobi

Nairobi is an unusually convenient base for a self drive safari, because several of Kenya's finest parks are within a comfortable day's drive. Amboseli, with its elephants and views of Kilimanjaro, is roughly four hours south. The Maasai Mara is around five to six hours west depending on which gate you use and the state of the final stretch. Tsavo East and West lie along the Mombasa road, and Lake Nakuru and Naivasha are close enough that people regularly do them as a long weekend.

Distance on a map is a poor guide to travel time here, because the final approach to many parks is unpaved and slow. A route that looks like three hours can take five once you leave the highway.
